An in-store podium that recommended and printed

The Fox and Ivy podium in store

The brief

Fox and Ivy, Tesco's homeware brand, wanted a way to help shoppers in store pick something for their home. The idea was a podium with a tablet on it: answer a few questions, get a product suggested, and walk away with it printed out. Each piece is ordinary on its own. Putting them together on a shop floor, where it had to keep going with nobody looking after it, was where the work was.

What I worked out and built

I wrote the software; there was no hardware work. A tablet app on the podium asked the shopper a short run of multiple choice questions, recommended a homeware product to suit their answers, and printed the recommendation for them to take away.

Constraints

The podium stood in a shop, on the retail floor, and had to keep working through normal store hours with no engineer on hand.
